Day 86 (Sun 10/01) Great salt basin, sand mountain, leaving desert

We are riding through the roughly 10 mile long Great Salt Basin. Nearby is Sand Mountain where we can see lots me trailers parked and ATVs driving all over it, about 15 mi east of Fallon.

Not a lot of plants were growing in the salt basin, because plants don't grow well in salt (The Romans salted the fields of Carthage, now Tunisia, after one of the punic wars I recall). However, I see more clouds overhead and the vegetation is increasing in size and quantity. We have made it through the most arid part of the Great Basin.

There was quite a bit of traffic of all kinds on Highway 50 once again. "Lonliest highway", indeed.
