Day 36: Arrival in Macpherson, KS after 78 miles and one tired Maggie

(photo: Maggie shortly before our arrival in MacPherson)

I haven't posted much today because we were trying to be fairly focused to keep going and beat the heat on the 78 miles to MacPherson, which at 30,000 people is a similar size to Emporia, KS where we left this morning.

It was plenty hot today with temperatures in the high 90s by the time we reached Macpherson. The wind was favorable out of the SE earlier in the day but as time went on seemed to turn into a headwind. Fortunately we kept up the pace despite the heat and Maggie's poor butt.

Maggie is scouting motel accomodation because, in my experience, it is a tough job to find host families in a city of this size, the fire department is professional, not volunteer (volunteer fire depts are more lax on the rules and may let you stay there), and the churches are usually out of self-defense, less welcoming than their country counterparts. I have already been to the Chamber of Commerce, which was closed on a Saturday and the library, which told me there was a "Mike's Bikes shop" where I can ask about host families but it is a long shot. Most likely we will be motelling it tonight, but we will be comfortable, air conditioned, and of course get our showers.

Mag reported that the Red Coach Inn has a pool and charges $50 for 2 with tax. That's fine with me though there might be a lower priced option.
